When Life Gets You Down, Stand Back Up
Life feels like it’s been rough for a lot of us in 2025. I won’t get into details about why it’s been a toughy for me but one thing that’s helped has been — insert shocked face here — consistent and purposeful movement.
One exercise that I always find to be the MOST therapeutic is the Turkish Get-Up. “What the heck is that?” you ask. Well, my friends. Let me tell you.
Ahhhh, the Turkish Get-Up: This exercise is the ultimate full-body move that makes you feel both incredibly strong and like you can be best friends with the floor. And if you don’t understand why that last point is epically important, you don’t know any older people who are deathly afraid to fall.
Here’s the gist: You start lying down, holding a weight (usually a kettlebell) overhead like it’s a prized trophy. Then, through a series of carefully coordinated steps—rolling, lunging, and using every stabilizing muscle you didn’t know existed—you gracefully (or not) stand up, all while keeping that weight overhead. And then… you reverse it, coming back down with the same amount of control.
It requires concentration, because if your brain checks out, your body will follow. It builds shoulder stability, core strength, mobility, and coordination, all in one deceptively slow and sometimes-grueling movement. And, because I can’t stress this enough, it teaches you how to safely get down to the ground and BACK UP, a skill we all need embedded in our bodies for a healthy future.
Are YOU interested in learning how to perform this wondrous movement yourself? Yes? YAY! I’m creating a free tutorial just for you which will be available in April! If you’d like to get it, simply sign up for my TruFit newsletter below and you’ll be the first to get it!
In the meantime, start making friends with the floor, y’all. It might change your life.
